Using the UXG with HostiFi instead of a UDM

Why would you choose the UXG over a UDM?

Learn why the UXG might be a better choice than a UDM or any Cloud Gateway device

Ubiquiti offers two solutions for customers looking to host the UniFi network controller. You can either purchase a Cloud Gateway device, such as the Dream Machine Pro or you can host the UniFi Network controller yourself. This can be hosted on your own hardware or using a hosting provider, such as HostiFi. When you run UniFi yourself or use HostiFi, you can then choose to use the UXG router devices, which come in various models.

If you want fast and reliable UniFi hosting, check out HostiFi with fast support, regular backups, managed updates and prices from just $9 per month.

Why use the UXG Instead of a UDM?

The UniFi Dream Machine (UDM) and other Cloud Gateway devices combine a lot of the core network components into one piece of hardware.

The UDM combines four roles into one device:

  • Gateway (router/firewall)
  • Switch
  • Access Point (on some models)
  • Hosting the UniFi Network Controller

The all-in-one device nature of the UDM can definitely be convenient, but for a lot of more advanced deployments - this can be limiting too. The UXG is however, just the gateway, which for those complicated installations, this can be a really good thing.

Why use the UXG with HostiFi?

With HostiFi, we host the UniFi controller in the cloud, using our fast and reliable hosting network. Instead of using the UDM to manage the UniFi controller, that can be offloaded to our fast and maintained, cloud platform.

Modularity and reliability

Because the UniFi Controller isn't hosted with an on-premise device, such as a UDM - any power outages or reboots mean that the UniFi controller hosted on HostiFi stays online and remains fully accessible. You also don't have to contend with database crashes and restoring devices.

Scalability

With the UDM, there is a performance ceiling regarding how many client devices it can cope with, but also how many UniFi devices (APs and switches) it can handle too. Once you reach that limit, you have to swap out the UDM for another more powerful version. With HostiFi and the UXG, the UniFi Controller is hosted in the cloud, so more capacity can be added if you need to manage more UniFi devices.

Less On-Site Hardware

There isn't any need to keep a UDM or any other Cloud Gateway device on site. Meaning deployment times can be reduced. Also, if any devices need to be replaced, that can be handled very quickly without the need to restore UDM devices from backups.

Multi-Site Management

With UniFi with HostiFi, you can benefit from the multi-site integration, meaning for MSPs - multiple client sites can be managed from one central dashboard.

Expert Support

The support team at HostiFi is made up of Ubiquiti experts who are happy to help regarding any questions or issues when setting up your UXG. We also have plenty of detailed support guides and videos over at support.hostifi.com.

Conclusion

Using any of the UXG models with HostiFi is an ideal solution for MSPs, IT professionals and power users who want to move away from the all-in-one design of the UDM, while gaining the reliability and flexibility of cloud hosting.

HostiFi

HostiFi provides hosting for both Ubiquiti and TP-Link software-defined-networking (SDN) applications, with servers for UniFi, UISP and Omada. We also offer network consulting, with HostiFi Pro.
