First look at the new UISP Console

Unboxing, overview and setup!

Ubiquiti first publicly revealed the UISP Console and other new devices back in the summer last year, through a YouTube video going over the new revamped UISP line of devices. However, it has taken from then till now to get the UISP Console beyond the EA store. In the last few weeks, Ubiquiti has launched the device in the US, as well as in the UK and the EU. Priced from $299 in the US and from €364.80 / £323.94 in the EU and UK.

The UISP Console can be used as a server to host the UISP Console, it can be used as a powerful gateway for a medium network, with an integrated switch too. The UISP Console can also feature as a powerful router, and can be adopted to an external UISP controller, such as the UISP server we provide at HostiFi.

Specs and features

On the front of the device, there are nine RJ45 ports, eight of which are switched and the last one is used for WAN. Then on the right-hand side, we have two SFP+ ports, both capable of 10GbE. One is dedicated for WAN and the other for LAN. Around back, there are two ways to power the UISP Console, you can use the included 24V power supply, or use the 'Power TransPort' connector, which we have already seen in use on the UISP Router and UISP Switch.

The 'Power TransPort' will be used in conjunction with the upcoming UISP Power UPS devices, which were previewed in the summer.

Power options include proprietary lockable 'Power TransPort' socket and DC 24V connector

As mentioned, the UISP Console can host the UISP application, or be adopted to an external controller, which is the best way to use the device.

The UISP Console can be rack mounted in a 1U encloursre, included are the extender ears as well as fittings for mounting on a wall or underneath a desk.

Can the UISP Console be added to an external UISP controller, such as HostiFi?

Yes, in the video below we demonstrated how to adopt the UISP Console to HostiFi.

First, power up the UISP Console and launch the UISP app on your mobile device. The app will detect the device over Bluetooth and walk you through the setup process. When it asks you to name the device, there are two buttons. Clicking next will proceed to setup the UISP application on the device itself, instead for adopting to HostiFi UISP applications, click  'Adopt to my UISP Application' and the setup process is like any other device.

Routing features

The new UISP devices, such as this new UISP Console, UISP Switch and UISP Router are nowhere near as feature rich as EdgeRouter and EdgeSwitch devices. For example, both the UISP Router and UISP Console have more than enough capability to run more than one WAN and they even lack the ability to reassign the WAN port. Ubiquiti has a long way to go in terms of building up the feature set to become comparative with EdgeMAX but hopefully they get there soon.

Having said that, there are a wide range of routing features already exposed in the UISP GUI, including OSPF, DDNS but no sign of PPPoE server functionality yet which is a pretty important feature for ISPs and WISPs and this is the market Ubiquiti is targeting these towards.
