Back in May this year, Starlink launched Portability mode which allows users to use their Starlink dish when away from home. This differs from the RV plan in a few ways which we'll discuss in this post.
Portability mode allows subscribers to use their dish anywhere else in the same continent as their registered home address, for an extra fee per month.
For $25 extra per month, Starlink will let you take the dish around with you. However, this won't work when the vehicle is in motion.
When the dish is in in Portability mode, it will have less priority and will revert to be on a "best effort basis" for connectivity. When the dish is back at its home address, it'll receive priority connection again.
Portability mode is also a good way to get Starlink if you are in a waitlist area. Reilly Chase explored this in his post explaining how the pipe adaptor works.
Shortly after revealing Portability Mode, Starlink also launched the RV plan. This plan is designed for customers who want to use Starlink when they go camping in an RV or motorhome. Unlike other plans, it is pay-as-you-go and can be paused and resumed whenever you need it. It is $135/month which is the same price as purchasing standard Starlink plus the Portability Mode add on.
Like Portability Mode, RV plans are also de-prioritised and it cannot be used whilst in motion either.
