Yesterday, Ubiquiti announced the first public release of UniFi Network 7.2.x with a very long list of improvements and bug fixes. Many of them are much requested additions to UniFi such as local DNS record support for client devices and OpenVPN client support. In this blog post we are going to cover the top four improvments Ubiquiti has made, along with before and after screenshots where it is possible.
Note: UniFi 7.2.91 is currently a release candidate only, here at HostiFi we are testing out all the new features to make sure it is stable and suitable to be rolled out to our customers. Once this is deemed so, we'll be communicating it out.
This new section can be found in Settings > Networks and allows you to edit the default settings applied to every network you create as well as any default settings on any new switch ports added. For example, if you wanted Multicast DNS disabled on every network created, rather than having to make sure it is unchecked when a new one is made you can come to this section and turn it off by default.
The same goes for switch port settings which has been tidied up and can be found in the same section.
With this release, support for local DNS records has been added, allowing you to have set domain names for each of your internal servers for example. In our example we have nas.hostifi.com and navigating to this address when on the internal network will take you to the web interface for that device. For it to work however, that device does need to be on a Fixed IP.
This release also adds support for OpenVPN client, which has been a heavily requested feature however this requires UDM SE firmware 2.5.x or UDM firmware 1.13.x or later, both of which are not publicly available as of writing.
Accessible from the main dashboard are some new metrics for internet health, along with a list of events, recent speed test and traffic levels. There is also a latency monitor which pings out to ping.ubnt.com.
This tab shows a graph with client RSSI levels with stats on how each client is doing. With counters for retries, roaming events and more. This does seem to take a while to populate any new data, so when you do update to 7.2.91 it might seem it is not working for the first few hours.
Prior to this release, the modem outlet port on the UXG Pro was non functional and no GUI had been made for controlling the settings for it. However, now with 7.2.91 we can now set the outlet on or off, set it to just power or power cycle the device plugged in and we also have a manual power cycle option too.
Also redone is the old 'Ports insights' section, which is accessible from a Switch Site panel > Ports. This has now been renamed to port management and displays useful graphs for usage in bps, packet count and PoE draw over time.
More information about the new UniFi release, 7.2.91 can be found the official community post on Ubiquiti's site. In the mean time, the team here at HostiFi is actively testing this release to make sure there are no nasty surprises, if all goes well we will likely push the update soon to our UniFi servers.
