The Flood Light for UniFi Protect has been out for a while now, having been launched back in May 2021. However, in this post and the video at the bottom, we're going to take a look at the hardware of the device, see what comes in the box. Once it has been installed, we'll take a look at the funcatinaltity both as a standalone device and paired with a camera within the UniFi Protect software.
The flood light is powered by standard 802.3af PoE and has a 10/100 Ethernet interface, as network traffic is pretty minimal, only traffic happens between it and the UniFi Protect controller for management and knowing when to turn on, when being used with a camera. The functionality of the light is quite basic, it senses motion on the integrated PIR sensor and then activates.
For added functionality, the flood light can be paired with any UniFi Protect camera. This means that once the camera sees motion, it'll then activate the light. This can come in handy when you need to light up areas that you are walking to, but would be too slow for the PIR sensor, so you can use the camera in conjunction with the sensor itself.
Within UniFi Protect, the light can be activated from the live view of the camera it is paired with as well as manually turning the light on and off, setting the conditions it comes on too. For example, you can specify for how long the light stays on for after being triggered, if it comes on when it is dark out or just always. The brightness of the LED can be chosen, as can the sensitivity of the PIR sensor.
In a more recent update of UniFi Protect, there is the ability to see a log of the detections that the PIR sensor has seen, complete with time stamps.
Once the flood light is adopted into UniFi Protect, under the settings you have the ability to pair the light with one camera. As mentioned above, this will mean the light will come on when the integrated PIR sensor detects some movement as well as when the camera does too. If you want, you can even pair multiple flood lights with one camera, useful in a long walkway outside - for example.
Because the device has been on sale for well over a year at this point, it seems the general availability is pretty good, with no stock issues recently on the official Ubiquiti store, both in the US and the EU. In the US, the device retails for $99 and the in the UK and EU, for €120 / £104.95.
